While assigned to the Liquor Enforcement Detail I worked with Detectives John McTernhan, Mike Meelhuysan and Jeff Kornegay (All of us retired now). We did some really big investigations together and had fun doing it. Our de facto leader was Jeff. He was (is) very intelligent and intellectual. While Mike, John and I were clowning around, Jeff would be deep in thought about some weighty matter. He would bring us back to reality. Jeff was also a member of the LDS church…thus the “J. Smith Rocks” t-shirt. So actually, Jeff was the brain trust of our team…the rest of us were basically clowns.

Mike, Jeff and I at 5:02 AM dressed as city garbage workers, going through a suspect’s garbage. We hit the jackpot on this specific “trash rip.” Jeff found damning evidence which completed a huge money laundering/drug trafficking case.
