When I was a newly promoted sergeant, my boss asked me if I would like to attend a formal dinner at a one of the big shot resorts in town. I said, “Would I ever!” I thought that maybe this is typical of a police supervisor to be able to attend such functions. So, I was told to wear my best uniform and show up at the resort at a certain time. It turned out it was a BIG event with big money people from our community present. But then I realized the real reason why a lowly sergeant was there…as window dressing. I didn’t actually serve drinks, but I was definitely not there as an equal to the other people. I was pretty much ignored and ended up hanging out with the food servers who fed me well.
