Early in my police career I was fortunate to have Lieutenant TJ Martin as a boss. When you are a rookie, Lieutenants are like gods. But, TJ was down-to-earth and had a good sense of humor. He liked my cartoons and so he was always friendly with me, even as a rookie. As our careers carried on, I continued to be in his chain-of-commands. After he had been promoted to Commander, he fell out of favor with the then Police Chief. As a result, TJ was assigned to the most unattractive Commander position that typically only new Commanders have to fill…and then its only for a short time. That position is called “Car 4.” The Commander who is Car 4 is the nighttime person in charge of the police department. TJ was Car 4 for a total of three years! That’s a long time. But, he kept his sense of humor through it all. I drew this for him during that time.
NOTE: TJ retired as a much admired Assistant Chief. He is now happily playing golf in northern Arizona.
