In 2009, Officer Mike Meelhuysen was on-duty in west Phoenix when he responded to a home invasion call at an apartment complex. When he arrived on the scene one of the suspects came out of the apartment where he had not only entered illegally, but he had sexually assaulted a girl. The suspect saw Mike down below him in the parking lot and pointed a pistol at him. Mike responded to the threat by shooting the suspect and critically injuring him. I was Mike’s sergeant at the time. Mike is one of the funniest guys I know, so I knew he’d like a cartoon about his shooting.
NOTE: Sergeant Mike Meelhuysen recently retired from the police department after a 27 year career. I worked with him two times in my career. On both of those assignments, Mike added a lot of fun to our duties.
